About Us

International department of Leonard Cheshire Disability and its partners straddles 54 countries in the world. Through six regional offices our development work takes place in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean.Leonard Cheshire Disability’s South Asia chapter started in 1955 when the first Cheshire Home was established in Mumbai. Over the past 55 years our footprint in the region has grown substantially. Today, Cheshire services function in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka – a region that houses more than 68 million people with disabilities. The South Asia Regional Office (SARO) partners 36 organisations that are managed by local committees, across the region. Through this network, SARO reaches out to 20,600 people with disabilities.SARO’s work is multi pronged and aims at holistic transformation both at the personal and institutional levels. Key focus areas include:

  • Livelihood
  • Health and rehabilitation
  • Support for everyday living
  • Policy and Campaigns (is a cross cutting area)
  • Research and Evaluation (is a cross cutting area)

Under Livelihood theme SARO has initiated Livelihood Resource Centres (LRC) across South Asia to cater Livelihood Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities. These LRCs are initiated in Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka. The main aim of the LRCs is to cater wage / self employment opportunities for persons with disabilities by providing training, placement support and bridging the gap to get better livelihood opportunities.
