‘Access to Livelihoods’ is one of the flagship programmes of Leonard Cheshire Disability under the strategic partnership with the Accenture Foundation since 2008 aims to improve livelihoods opportunities for persons with disabilities through skills development, inclusive training and support. It is implemented through building local partnerships and stakeholder engagement in India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Philippines and South Africa.

Leonard Cheshire Disability is holding an international conference on 14th June 2017 at Bangalore, India to bring together multiple stakeholders and sectors from over 30 project locations from six countries. This event will showcase the globally recognized Livelihoods Resource Centre (LRC) approach, established under the ‘Access to Livelihoods’ programme through sharing the learning, best practices and achievements in providing inclusive economic opportunities to persons with disabilities.
 
The LRCs and Jobability.org, an online resource for persons with disabilities act as one-stop-shops for persons with disabilities seeking employment, providing training, career guidance and links between employees and employers.

As part of this programme, nearly 25000 people with disabilities (PWDs) have been trained in Asia and Africa and over 18000 PWDs have been placed in various sectors such as IT/ITES, manufacturing, hospitality, banking, retail etc. or started their own businesses. The programme has facilitated to ensure a greater role in society, become more self-sufficient and realizes their hopes and aspirations.

About the conference

The overall objective of this conference is to bring together multiple stakeholders such as representatives from key employers/corporates, Government organizations, training institutions, sponsors, NGOs, DPOs, Experts in the disability sector, business association representatives, etc to share collective experience and knowledge of Livelihoods Resource Centres in providing livelihoods opportunities for persons with disabilities and addressing the issues and challenges faced by them.
The conference will specifically cover the following aspects.

  • Share highlights of Access to Livelihoods’ programme in providing inclusive economic opportunities for persons with disabilities, that can be scaled up/replicated
  • Panel discussion on skill development, promoting inclusion in the workplace/businesses and digital inclusion Experts panel from the government, donors, skills providers and other key stakeholders
  • Create a network of likeminded organizations/stakeholders to take forward the disability inclusion agenda with multi-stakeholders
