Sachin Kumar, a Help Desk Executive in Dell International Service Private Limited in Gurgaon

26-year-old Sachin Kumar works as a Help Desk Executive in Dell International Service Private Limited in Gurgaon. Being orthopedically handicapped has not prevented him being comfortable and satisfied in his new environs where Dell - provides a congenial working atmosphere - and practices with a message of inclusion!

Sachin Kumar belongs to a middle class family. He lives with his parents and younger sister in Jahangir Puri, Delhi, where his parents run a small business. He completed his schooling from Kendriya Vidyalaya.

At the age of 21 Sachin caught chicken pox. The high fever led to a brain clot paralyzing his right side. Sharing his pain he says, “I was bedridden for a few months. I gradually recovered. I gave up my studies and also set aside the course in animation I was doing. I decided to look for a job but was not able to find the right one as I was not trained!”

Sachin reveals, “My friend told me about Livelihood Resource Centre (LRC) of Evangelical Fellowship of Indian Commission on Relief (EFICOR). I visited their centre to seek the best opportunities for starting a career for myself in my disabled condition. LRC first guided me towards trainings like Basic English, Communications and essential software skills. LRC’s encouragement, trainings and moral support motivated me to continue my graduation. LRC also provided me with counseling and confidence building techniques. All this helped me to get over my feelings of failure. I developed good communication skills in writing and speaking. EFICOR prepared me for interviews and also facilitated my interviews with Big Bazar, Reebok, Aegis and Dell International Private Ltd.”

Sachin shares with pride, “I got selected by Dell as a help desk executive on a salary of Rs.15000/- per month. LRC paid for my travel allowances for the first month of work as my home was quite distant from my office. Proper guidance and support has helped to enhance my personality. Today I have regained my confidence and I look on life positively.”

LRC staff says, “Sachin is humble. He has the qualities of dedication and sincerity which will help him go-ahead in his career.” Seniors in Dell International Service appreciate Sachin’s work. His grateful father says, “Thank you LRC team for your efforts in helping my son get his confidence back.”

EFICOR is one among the many LRCs started by Leonard Cheshire Disability in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Philippines and in South Africa - to help the disadvantaged get their rightful share and space in mainstream society. LRCs are part of Leonard Cheshire’s award winning program called ‘Access to Livelihood’ which is funded by Accenture Foundation.
