LCDDP have helped me to stand on my own feet and earn my own living!", says Rajya Lakshmi
Date: 01/11/2018
40-year-old Aripirala Rajya Lakshmi is from Guntur district in the coastal region of Andhra Pradesh State in India. She is unmarried and has locomotor disability.
Rajya Lakshmi relates, “My family consists of my mother, my brother and his wife. Ours is a middle class family. We live in our own house. My disability is severe and I use a wheel chair to move around. I became disabled at the age of 2 after a high fever and due to lack of proper medical care. The fever left my lower limbs paralyzed. I cannot climb stairs or walk steadily.”
“I completed my Masters in Commerce after facing several difficulties. But my M.Com degree was not able to get me a suitable job. My father passed away when we were children. I and my mother, a house wife, are dependent on my brother’s income. My brother has to take care of us as well as his wife.” shares Rajya Lakshmi.
“I get a monthly pension from the Disability Welfare Department of Andhra Pradesh. It helps me to meet my basic needs. But I was determined to work and supplement the family income,” says Rajya Lakshmi motivated for an independent livelihood and contributing to the family.
“I got enrolled in the LCDDP-LRC project. LRC is the Livelihood Resource Centre of Leonard Cheshire Disability Development Programme in Andhra Pradesh. I went to their office in Guntur. The LRC team explained about their project. They identified my requirements. They requested me to meet their LCDDP Placement officer for an immediate placement. I also attended LCDDP’s ‘Ready to Succeed’ training which boosted my confidence and brushed up my employment skills. I was a little familiar with computer basics. I learnt Tally ERP 9 (accountancy package) with GST (Goods and Service Tax recently implemented by the Indian Government for sales of products and services). I studied at Bright Computers, Guntur. LRC team counseled me and tried to build my self-confidence and self-esteem,” says Rajya Lakshmi with a smile.
“After the training and counseling I developed a little confidence to take up a job. With the intervention of LCDDP I got employment as a computer operator and accountant with Malty Wizz Company on a salary of Rs.7500/- per month. To supplement my income I also take up small computer assignments at home. I am very grateful to LCDDP. They have helped me to stand on my own feet and earn my own living!” says Rajya Lakshmi gratefully.
LCDDP-LRC is funded by the EUIL (European Union India Livelihood) project which started in January 2016. The EUIL project aims at providing employment and livelihood to 5000 people with disability during its 3 year period. It is also studying and developing its knowledge base on the rights to livelihood of people with disability. Today EUIL project works with 5 partners in Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. LCDDP partners EUIL project team in the state of Andhra Pradesh under the guidance and support of Leonard Cheshire, South Asia Region Office, Bengaluru, India.
