Rita Kumari of Gola, Ramgarh of Jharkhand, 27 years, has low vision and has to be the bread earner of their family of four younger sisters, her mother and two brothers due to the socio-economic scenario of the family. She completed her intermediate and could not pursue further studies due to untimely demise of her father and lack of financial support.
Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) volunteers as part of Virtual Livelihoods Resource Centre (VLRC) in collaboration with Leonard Cheshire met her for as part of identification. The team explained her how Jobability and portal and Economic Inclusion programme of VLRC can increase her chances of getting an employment suitable for her. Rita shared that she wants to increase her knowledge in digital literacy field and can also run a digital centre of her own. She took the training under DEF, became a volunteer, and registered other persons with disabilities in the neighbourhood for their support services requests. Rita performed well and is under training to become a Samarth Soochnapreneur (Digital entrepreneur with disabilities running data, information, and online application service centre for the neighbourhood as a business) from her locality. She is confident of running her own Centre and earn to support herself and her family. There are many such Samarth Soochnapreneurs supporting their neighbourhood villagers and persons with disabilities for information and services across the remote corners of India.
